3 Market Analysis

3.1 Method

To be able to come up with a product that is marketable we had to conduct a market analysis

of the products that are currently available. Some of the products we encountered are assumed

to be concept products, example of such products are Apple’s iBook and iRiver's iRiver-

eBook. Products from twelve different companies were analyzed and the survey results are

presented below [8].

3.2 Aim

The aim of our study is to discover the technology behind the present E-Readers in the

market, the similarities and differences and the formats they support. Other issues that where

investigated include look-and-feel, the relative ease of using both the hard- and the soft-UI

what they offer and what they do not offer. Furthermore, the marketing models of these

products were also investigated.

3.3 Market Analysis Results

Some of the information gathered during the investigation is presented in this section.

3.3.1 Dimensions

The dimension of the products in the market presently, range from 175.6mm by 123.6mm by

13.8mm to 216mm by 155mm by 16mm. They all have flat rectangular screen without any

cover with exception of Polymer Vision, “Readius” that is foldable. Their weights range

between 176g for the STAReBOOK STK-101 to 388g for the iRex iLiad.

3.3.2 UI (User Interface)

The only product that was physically accessed was the iRex iLiad. After the boot up the user

is presented the main UI, which can be navigated using the up or down arrow. The options

are; press the enter button and then read a document, select the configuration that will connect

the device to the Internet using a wifi, go back to main menu or exit. The iLiad and most of

the E-Readers investigated have few keys with the exception of Jinke Electronics V8,

Amazon Kindle and Sony Libre EBR-1000 that have several keys.
